I make neon work that tributes one of my favorite authors, Kurt Vonnegut and his novel Slaughterhouse Five. I find comfort and commiseration in his stories. His novels are born from a post-modern America dealing with quickly changing times, violence and an overall moral decline of the human condition. His sarcasm and irony provide comic relief to some of life's horrors and reflect a certain defiance against sadness, violence and the things that bring us down.
Among few illustrations in the book is Vonnegut's sarcastic tombstone epitaph, "Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt". Again, this is a sarcastic and ironic epitaph that speaks about the nature of human life. Although it might bring memories of struggle to the surface, it simultaneously makes us smile. The concept of a grouping of words that create such a raw human emotion is quite priceless.
