So it goes
2008
paper, fruit, beeswax, steel, dirt,
This swing is about my mother who passed in November of 2007. The shape of the swing is womblike and was made with a steel armature and sewn with handmade abaca paper. The paper was treated with beeswax and fruit, two materials that could symbolize life and fertility, and made to look like decomposition. I enjoy the juxtoposition of the materials and their inherent meanings versus the materials and their intended meanings. The dirt used was fertilized and added another sensory component. The cockroaches were just used for the photography. This piece helped output some lingering thoughts about death and grief.
